Multipurpose Potting Table...Done!

If you have been reading along with me for a while, you will remember my post about wanting to find a potting table for our deck. I wanted it to be versatile and use it for planting and extra table space for entertaining. After collecting two old barn doors and an ugly table this is what I ended up with.
The old barn doors were found on craigslist for free, I knew this one would make a fabulous table top. Now the search was on for some legs.

A couple of weeks later I found the table for eight dollars at a garage sale. It had a hideous laminate top but the legs were wood and I knew they would work.

After taking the table apart, a new apron was made with one of the old barn doors. My husband used a 2x10 on top to give it some height.

Then I primed and painted with two coats of exterior paint.

After the paint was dry, I brushed this glaze on and wiped it with a damp cloth.

Then came the fun part...the hand sander! My first time using one.

I would have been there all day distressing this by hand.

Here is a close up of the barn door turned table top.

The basket tote was my Mothers Day present. It will be perfect for the farmers market!

I'm thinking the clock needs to come down a bit.

For less than forty dollars I have a multipurpose potting table that will get a lot of use this summer. I can already picture it with candles burning and a pitcher of frozen margaritas!

  25. And how cute it looks sitting there! I found my "potting bench" a few weeks ago at the antique mall. A thirties formica table. A gardener must have a potting bench. And my old one ended up in my kitchen!

  27. I love that table, and especially the barn door top! And you distressed those legs to perfection. I would love to know how to do that the right way, but every time I try, it just ends up looking like it's dirty!
It's my first White Wednesday, so it's really nice to meet you!

  30. You really did a fine job on that table! I just love it. I don't think I would find too many barn doors on Craig's list out here in San Diego but I am gonna start searching just in case! Saw your post on Mustard Seed Creations link party. Thanks for sharing

  33. Londen-

This came out so cute!!! I love that the table top is an old barn door. I do agree...the clock should come down a bit, but the whole thing looks WONDERFUL! How easy using the glaze versus distressing the whole thing. Looks Great!

  35. The table is gorgeous and I love the way you accessorized.

  36. Oops, just realized.... you used the hand sander to distress. I misread and thought you achieved that great distressed look from the glaze alone. Now that would be an invention...wouldn't it!

  39. I think I spent too much time drooling over this post to have any time left to comment, but I'm looking at it again (more drooling). LOVE the potting bench. I SO wish we lived next door to each other. We could do all kinds of fun projects together while the girls all played. Awww...well, if you're ever thinking of moving to California....

About the cake, yup, I made her little cake and she thoroughly enjoyed smashing it to smithereens. :)

I hope you see this comment...you sure have a lot of comments on this clever little potting table of yours...

  40. wandered over here from Frugal Friday and had to comment. You see I just found a table like that, laminate and all for 9.99 and was planning to put it out our bedroom deck for me to sit on in the mornings with coffee...I might have just changed my mind!!!! Thanks!

  43. I have a table exactly like this. It was our first dining table 43 years ago when we married. It now sits in the garage holding junk. I love what you did. Can I ask, did you remove the table top ( I see you removed the drop leaves) before installing the barnwood? I have to try this. So nice! Thanks!

  44. Mary,
So funny you have the same table! I did remove the table top and the apron. To add height a 2x10 was used on the top before adding the barnwood. We also used the old wood to make a bigger apron. Hope this helps.
