Potted Hydrangea

I love hydrangeas and every year I admire them...in other people's gardens. I also love hydrangeas in big pots so today I bought one. This is the year for me to give them a try.

The big metal pot is from TJ Maxx, I have seen them at Marshalls too. Mine is from last year but I know they are still around. I drilled a few holes in the bottom for drainage.

So we can enjoy it up close I put it on the deck, also known as the family room. I will save that post for another day.

I'm hoping this will be a good spot for my new friend. The tag said it could be planted in a container...we will see. The best part is I bought it from Lowe's and they have a one year guarantee on all of their perennials. What do I have to lose?  If you have any tips about growing big beautiful hydrangeas, please share.

  2. Good luck with the hydrangeas! I haven't had any yet! I love the pot. Yes, I have seen and loved them at TJMAX and talked myself out of them because "what would I do with it?" - glad to see a great idea! Now, I wonder if they are still there....

  4. Oooo - love the pot! I have a few hydrangeas in my front yard - they get morning sun and afternoon shade and are doing awesome. They get HUGE though. I've never tried one in a pot, so I'm interested to see how yours does. They like acidic soil, so you'll probably want to fertilize every now and then. Good luck! And I can't wait to see your outdoor family room! ....And, I love the fairy garden!!

  6. I love hydrangeas. I know that victorian women used to use them to tell how acidic their soil was. The hydrangea will turn colors with the acid content in the soil. I forget which way it goes though. You can change the color of your hydrangea by changing the acidity of the soil.

That is my wealth of knowledge! Love what you did with yours though! I am running out to get me one of those buckets! I don't know what I will do with it though. Maybe set it next to the still empty planters?

  11. I love hydrangeas, too. A couple of years ago, my husband, who knows even less about gardening than I do, trimmed ours BEFORE it bloomed in the spring, so of course, it didn't bloom that year. Actually it hasn't bloomed since then, but I think it is going to be prolific this year. There seem to be LOTS of blooms coming out!
Thanks for stopping by my blog and commenting on my fence.

  14. One of my all-time favorites! My only advice - be careful of too much sun. I spent a ridiculous amount on one plant, had it in afternoon sun and it suffered. I replanted it on the side of the house (with less sun) and it has taken off. I bought two cheap, cheap ones from Costco, placed them on the same side of the house, and they're out of control growing. You have to deal with ugly winter stems, but they're early to turn green and will flower all summer. Enjoy!
