When we found our island it was being used as a counter for a cute little shop. It was perfect and just the focal point the house needed. We eat there everyday but things have changed.
The butcher-block top does not hang over so it's not really intended to have chairs pulled up to it. That worked just fine for us, but if your only three feet tall it does not work at all. Without that overhang our little one can't tuck her legs under and is too big to be using her highchair.
So the search is on for a new kitchen island. This has not been an easy task! Especially because the one we have now was found for such a great deal.
Of course I have pictures of islands I think would work with a little tweaking, all very different....
I love the open feel of this one but would hate to lose the storage.
I think this one from Annie Brahler is so unique and pretty. I love the legs and color but the shape wouldn't work for us. Stay tuned to see what we come up with without breaking the bank. Wish us luck!

This island has so much character..love it! Could you put a new countertop on it that extends over one side? That's what we did with ours. Mark extended the countertop so the stools slide under...and we love it. Just a thought! Love the pics! I'd love to see what you did with your soffits too!

ReplyDeleteLook on craigslist for old kitchen cabinets and trim them out. I built mine from old cabinets. The tip for checking out Just Beachy is great too!

ReplyDeleteAre you SURE you can't just put a top on it that comes out maybe 9 inches on one side? Who cares if the drawers aren't accessible (there are so many cases of false drawer fronts in islands anyway)Our Island now...while not beautiful is VERY functional. In our last kitchen we retrofitted an old cabinet with pul out pot and pan drawers...could you retrofit this one?

I really love a beautiful Island bench myself. I am in the middle of designing a new kitchen right now and it has a very versatile and lovely island bench which will not only serve as a kitchen utility bench but also seating for most meals for the family
